Parish Feast Day, October 11, 2003

St. John Russian Orthodox Community is dedicated to Saint John of San Fransico. On October 11, 1993 the holy relics of St. John were opened and found to be incorrupt. When our parish was organized Archimandrite (now Bishop) Peter suggested to Fr. Victor to consider having this be the parish feast day. Archbishop Alypy blessed for the community to celebrate its feast day on the opening of St. John's relics. It was a special joy for the faithful members of the Mission when Bishop Peter came to serve in Columbus on the actual day of the parish Feast Day. This was the first episcopal visit to our mission, and Vladyka's visit strengthen the resolve of the parishioners to continue in the desire to one day build a church.

Kursk Icon Of The Mother Of God Visits St Tikhon\'s

The parish family of St. Tikhon's was blessed with a visit of the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Theotokos of the Sign, This event took place on Tuesday evening, March 8.

This Russian icon of the Mother of God, now 700 years old, has been a constant source of healing, comfort, and deliverance from calamity for countless numbers of Orthodox Christians who sought the heavenly intercession of the Purest Theotokos.

Since its miraculous appearance as a pious hunter in the forest near Kursk, Russia in the year 1295, the icon has survived the fire, deliberate attempts at destruction, numerous wars, and the Russian Revolution. In 1919 the icon was carried out of Russia, and since 1957 has resided in the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Mother of God of the Sign in New York City.

Each year the wonderworking icon is taken on a pilgrimage around the world to parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, where the faithful venerate the icon and offer prayers to the Theotokos. The icon is considered to be the protection of Orthodox Christians living everywhere beyond the borders of Russia.
